D&D Campaign: New Beginnings

With the advent of Fourth Edition, support for 3.5 campaigns would soon wane and thus my easy access to pre-made material posed a significant risk on any D&D plans for the future. I decided to try out my first fourth edition campaign with Jeff, Remy, Cory, Garrett and Austin as the original players. We started in early June and took a break a few sessions in as I couldn’t handle drawing the map every time we got into an encounter.

On hiatus for several months, I began using a projector to show-case my maps, which severely cuts down on the work I have to do during gameplay. We began playing once again in November, this time taking up Brent, Mychael and Cody as three additional characters. Soon, tales of our fun spread and we took on additional players in the form of Marissa and Nick. By the end of 2008, I had nine players! This page is dedicated to them, and their characters.

The Characters

Austin as “Spah”, the Doppelganger Warlock.

Jeff as “Hoff Ironhall”, the Dwarf Warlord.

Garrett as “Gorn”, the Warforged Paladin.

Remy as “Grukk Razormaw”, the Orc Fighter.

Cory as “Eldrith”, the Wood Elf Ranger.

Brent as “Rayne”, the Half-elf Ranger.

Mychael as “Citric”, the Drow Rogue.

Cody as “Caballero”, the Minotaur Cleric.

Marissa as “Drissa”, the Dragonborn Rogue.

Nick as “Supheter Iulion”, the Human Wizard.

The Setting

The kingdom of Nentir has fallen after a particularly brutal five-year war. Since the end of the war, the Valley of Nentir has become a place of great despair, with slavers and bandits ruling the once-prosperous merchant roads. Monsters inhabit old manors that used to hold balls in celebration of the year’s good harvest. A harvest which, now, only supplies enough to barely feed the shrunken populous.

The campaign begins with the chance meeting of two individuals. A former commander serving with the dwarvish armies during the war, Hoff Ironhall passes his time these days teaching students battle tactics in the military academy of Fallcrest. Gorn, part of the warforged race created to do battle with the opposing army, was left without direction after the war and now spends his time dedicated to the god Moradin, creating weapons for the local citizens. These men and the others of the party were all active during the war, and each of their lives were left worse off by its crushing defeat. Fate has brought them together once more and now, united as The Vanguard, they aspire to take back their kingdom and restore the Nentir Vale to its former glory.

Here’s a page on Prasiolaire, the main continent in which the campaign is set.

Here’s the one-year anniversary post.
