Mystery Solved
When I rented the first season of Family guy ten or more weeks ago, I heard Bonnie Swanson for the first time. Her trilling, saccharine voice struck a memory I could not identify. I was convinced I should recognize her from a famous work. I called my mother and her husband over, but they didn’t remember either. They suggested I look on imdb, but Jennifer Tilly is nobody. The only film I have heard her in is Monsters, Inc. My memory suggested I had heard her many times more. I checked youtube videos of her other appearances on MTV’s John Stewart show and celebrity poker. The Bonnie voice is falsetto for her. Clearly, she resembled someone more famous; but, I couldn’t tell who. I despaired and gave up.
But, our minds churn unbeknownst to us. I realized the real source with no provocation. Jennifer Tilly’s voice sounds like Glynis Johns, Mrs. Banks of the film Mary Poppins. As she sang “Sister Suffragette,” her voice warbles in a unique manner. Yet I may no longer consider it unique. I wish I had a resource like Henry Higgins, of My Fair Lady, to discern where that vocal pattern comes from. The imdb biographies do not suggest a similar background. Ms Johns is ethnically Welsh and nationally South African. Tilly is an Asian-American and moved around the North American west coast during her adolescence. Perhaps their pipes peak peculiarly. However this came to be, I offer evidence of my claim that I once thought a Family Guy character served as mask to an actress for Disney.
